The All Progressives Congress (APC), in Nasarawa State has adopted the consensus arrangement as mode of selection of officials of the party at the ward, local government, state and national level.
This decision was arrived at during an expanded APC state executive council meeting which took place in Government House, Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital on Tuesday.
Earlier, the legal adviser of the party in the state, had to move a motion seeking to allow non members of the state executive council to participate in the meeting, following the decision by Governor Abdullahi Sule to allow wider participation in the decision making process of the party.
After careful deliberation by participants at the meeting and in line with the constitution of the party, the state chairman of the APC, Dr. Aliyu Bello, called on the member representing Awe/Doma/Keana Federal Constituency, Hassan Abubakar-Nalaraba, a member of the state executive council, to move a motion for the adoption of consensus as the mode of selection of officials of the party during the coming congresses.
His words, “I rise to move the motion that this expanded state executive council resolved to adopt as a preferred and recommended mode of selection of party officials at the ward, local government and state levels congresses, including but not limited to ward, local government, state and national level. Whereas such consensus is transparently and voluntarily achieved by all relevant stakeholders. I so move.”
Deputy National Secretary of the party, Professor Abdulkarim Abubakar-Kana (SAN) thereafter seconded the motion, while the first civilian governor of the state and former APC national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu took the gavel to take the voice votes of participants which was unanimously adopted the consensus arrangement.
In his speech earlier, state chairman of the party, Dr. Aliyu Bello, explained that the meeting was convened for participants to interact and for the state executive council of the party to brief them on the transformations so far recorded, especially since the emergence of the new leadership of the party at the national level.
Dr. Bello added that the APC has continued to witness much acceptance leading to the influx of defectors by eminent Nigerians.
Responding, Governor Abdullahi Sule, commended the stakeholders for adopting consensus arrangement for the selection of officials of the party, saying the decision will further bring peace to the party.
According to governor SULE, by adopting the consensus mode of selection, you have reduced all the challenges we are likely going to face. It means that the election of our congresses is all going to be conducted by consensus, which, in essence, means by you. You are going to take the decision and bring it back to us,” he stated.
Governor Sule used the medium of the meeting to re-emphasize his commitment to the zoning arrangement in the state.
The Governor stated that, being a product of zoning, he will be the last person to tamper with the arrangement that is ensuring peaceful coexistence in the state.
He equally seized the opportunity to update participants on the successes recorded by his administration, stressing that the outgoing year has been the most decisive in terms of inflow of resources.
ARISE NEWS reports that the meeting had in attendance former governor of the state, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, members of the national and state assemblies, present and former political office holders critical stakeholders across board as well as party officials.
