Following the release of 52 detained youths, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has praised Edo State authorities and student leaders for their constructive dialogue, which helped de-escalate tensions after a recent protest.
NANS President, Oladoja Olushola, commended Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, for his willingness to engage with student leaders and adopt a negotiation-based approach rather than a hardline stance, preventing further unrest.
According to NANS, 38 of the detained youths are students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, while the remaining 14 are local community members. Through strategic discussions, all 52 youths were released and related charges dropped.
Olushola highlighted that the outcome underscores the effectiveness of non-violent engagement. While recognizing citizens’ constitutional right to protest, he emphasized that structured dialogue and negotiation are preferable to confrontations that could disrupt governance and community relations.
The student body also thanked key mediators, including the State Security Service (SSS), Inspector General of Police – Kayode Egbetokun, Minister for Youth Development – Olawande Emmanuel Ayodele, Edo State Commissioner of Education – Paddy Iyamu, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement – Asefon Sunday.
NANS clarified that due process was followed, with verification and administrative procedures ensuring the right individuals were released responsibly.
While welcoming the peaceful resolution, NANS condemned theft, vandalism, and criminal acts disguised as protests, urging Nigerian students and youths to act responsibly and uphold law and order.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with governments and stakeholders to advance youth and student development, promote dialogue, and contribute to a more inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous Nigeria.
