President William Ruto is set to become the third Kenyan head of state to have a sports facility named after him. This follows an announcement by Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang, who declared that the planned Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Kapsabet will now bear the name William Ruto Stadium.
Construction of the stadium was recently launched by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, which took place at the ASK Kapsabet Showground.
The project, valued at Sh800 million, is expected to produce a modern facility with a seating capacity of 10,000.
Governor Sang said the name change was prompted by President Ruto’s development contributions to Nandi County, as well as the need to avoid confusion with the existing Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.
Currently, only founding President Jomo Kenyatta and former President Daniel arap Moi have stadiums named after them, with the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, being the most prominent national sports complex named in honour of a former president.
