The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that several passengers were injured in a train incident near Asham Train Station on Monday morning.
In a statement, NRC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kayode Opeifa said the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when a rear locomotive made contact with the passenger coach immediately ahead due to a coupling fault.
Opeifa assured that all injured passengers received prompt medical attention and were transported to nearby health facilities. He confirmed that no fatalities were reported. Emergency response protocols were immediately activated, and technical teams were dispatched to the site.
The Safety Investigation Bureau is also on site to conduct a full investigation in line with established safety procedures. The train later arrived at Idu Train Station at approximately 10:39 a.m., 38 minutes behind schedule, after the affected locomotive and coach were removed.
The NRC emphasized that passenger safety remains its top priority and that all necessary measures are being implemented to ensure the continued safe operation of train services. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
The Abuja-Kaduna line has experienced frequent derailments in recent years, prompting the Nigerian Senate to launch a nationwide probe into rail system failures in 2025.
In November 2025, lawmakers established an ad hoc committee, chaired by Adams Oshiomhole, to investigate recurring derailments, assess rail infrastructure, examine imported materials used in the sector, and review loans received from China. The committee was given six weeks to submit a detailed report.
Lawmakers also directed the NRC to address technical faults responsible for recent derailments and to restore the nation’s rail network to full operational capacity.
