The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has transferred Brig Gen Paul Muwonge just three months after he took over as commander of the Mountain Division.
In a communication, Muwonge has been appointed deputy commander of the 4th Infantry Division, replacing Brig Gen Jackson Kayanja, who has been reassigned to yet another undisclosed role within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
Muwonge had only been in charge of the Mountain Division since June 30, when he replaced Maj Gen James Birungi, who was deployed to Burundi as Uganda’s Defence Attaché. However, Birungi’s posting, later, it emerged, was largely a face-saving transfer, coming at a time when he was being investigated over alleged fabricated terror plots in Kampala.
Birungi was subsequently arrested in early September and remains detained at Makindye Military Barracks alongside his deputies, Col Peter Ahimbisibwe and Lt Col Ephraim Byaruhanga, who were earlier arrested in June.
Maj Gen Felix Busizoori, the division commander, praised Kayanja, for his professionalism and commitment during his tenure.
