A mud volcano in southern Taiwan has erupted once again, dramatically spewing a mixture of water, sediment, and gas into the air.
Videos from the scene show fascinated locals gathering around the Wandan mud volcano, tossing flaming rags into the bubbling crater.
The burning cloth ignites the methane gas rising from the eruption, creating brief bursts of fire that add to the surreal spectacle.
Geologist Dr. Mark Tingay told the BBC that the Wandan mud volcano is a particularly rare and intriguing geological feature. While it typically erupts from the same spot, he said new vents have occasionally opened several kilometres away, making it both unpredictable and scientifically valuable.
The volcano has now erupted 11 times in just three years, solidifying its reputation as one of Taiwan’s most active and unusual natural phenomena.
