Morocco made history by winning the FIFA U20 World Cup for the first time, defeating Argentina 2-0 in the final at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile on Sunday.
Yassir Zabiri put Morocco ahead in the 12th minute with a curling free-kick that beat Argentine goalkeeper Santino Barbi. The North Africans doubled their advantage in the 28th minute when Othmane Maamma set up Zabiri for a close-range finish.
Argentina dominated possession, holding 71 percent of the ball, but struggled to create clear chances as Morocco’s defenders remained compact and disciplined. The North Africans effectively neutralised Argentina’s attacks, with their goalkeeper producing crucial saves to preserve the lead.
Despite several VAR reviews and free-kick opportunities, Argentina failed to capitalise. Morocco tightened their defence in the second half with tactical substitutions that reinforced the midfield and back line, frustrating the South Americans’ attempts to break through.
Zabiri’s two-goal performance earned him the man of the match award, sealing a memorable night for Moroccan football.
