Over 19.8 million Nigerians are now registered on the National Social Register (NSR), the federal government has confirmed. According to the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Yusuf Sununu, these individuals represent over 90 million households across the country.
He said, “We are proud today to say that world over, Nigeria is the fifth country that has a National Social Register that contains the list of 19.8 million people and a household which is over 90 million Nigerians in that National Social Register. It is the largest in Africa, and it means that all the family, all the people are in the National Social Register”.
Sununu also revealed that 8,104,000 Nigerians have received at least one tranche of the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) under the National Social Investment Programme. “We have complied with the directive of Mr. President and the Central Bank of Nigeria to integrate the NSR with digital identities, including the Bank Verification Number (BVN) and National Identity Number (NIN)”.
“This has enhanced transparency, accountability, and financial inclusion”, he said.
On CCT disbursement, the Minister explained, “So far, 8,104,000 Nigerians have received at least one tranche, with many receiving up to three. Each tranche is issued monthly, and we will soon launch the next tranche.”
He added, “This time, we are making the figures public. Each state and local government will know exactly what it is allocated, silencing doubters and promoting transparency and accountability.
The President is committed to reaching the poor and vulnerable, and we want the public fully informed of our efforts”, he added.
