The family of the late Nigerian singer Mohbad has formally barred his widow, Wunmi, from using their surname until a DNA test confirms the paternity of her son, Liam.
The decision was announced in an official statement by the family head, Omolayo Aloba, and the late singer’s father, Joseph Aloba. According to them, Wunmi is prohibited from using the Aloba name pending the outcome of the ongoing paternity dispute, which has intensified since Mohbad’s controversial death on September 12, 2023.
Mohbad died after receiving an injection from an auxiliary nurse, a development that led to widespread public outcry and the subsequent exhumation of his body for autopsy. However, in May 2025, pathologists reported that the cause of death could not be established, leaving the investigation stalled.
In their new statement, the family maintained that Wunmi was never legally married to the singer under statutory or traditional Yoruba customs. “For the avoidance of doubt, no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo, as the required Yoruba traditional rites (payment of bride price) were never completed,” they said.
The Aloba family also named Oladayo Ogungbe as the sole legal representative overseeing matters related to the DNA test and Mohbad’s estate. Wahab Shittu will continue liaising with investigative agencies handling the late singer’s death.
They added that both Wunmi and the child would be included in the administration of the estate if the DNA test confirms Liam as Mohbad’s biological son.
The development marks a new chapter in the simmering dispute between the family and the widow as the public continues to demand closure on the singer’s death and paternity issue.
