The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) says sustained military pressure is pushing Boko Haram and other armed groups in the Lake Chad region closer to defeat.
The Force Commander, Major General Saidu Audu, gave the assurance during a visit to Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum in Maiduguri, marking part of his engagement tour following his assumption of office in November 2025.
In a statement issued Tuesday by the Acting Chief Military Public Information Officer of the MNJTF, Audu said the visit underscored the importance of Borno State as a critical partner in regional security efforts under the Lake Chad Basin framework.
According to the MNJTF commander, the task force has rolled out a coordinated operational plan focused on dismantling terrorist enclaves and neutralising non-state armed groups operating across the Lake Chad axis. He said recent operations by MNJTF troops and partner forces show encouraging signs that long-standing security threats in the region are being contained.
Audu reaffirmed that the MNJTF remains committed to its mandate of restoring peace and stability across affected areas, adding that collaboration with state governments remains vital to mission success.
While congratulating Audu on his appointment, Governor Zulum, reiterated Borno State’s commitment to supporting MNJTF operations. He commended the military and security agencies for their continued sacrifices, noting that their efforts have significantly improved security conditions and enabled recovery initiatives in the state.
The governor recalled Borno’s logistical and operational backing of MNJTF activities, including support for Operations Lake Sanity I and II, which he said helped disrupt insurgent movements.
Zulum urged the task force to sustain and intensify operations in the Lake Chad islands and tumbus, describing the areas as persistent safe havens exploited by terrorists. He also called for continuous troop presence, particularly on Nigeria’s side of the Lake Chad basin, to prevent regrouping and protect civilian communities.
Despite limited resources, the governor assured the MNJTF of the state government’s continued cooperation and support in the fight against insurgency.
