The Niger State Police Command has re-arrested a fugitive inmate who escaped from the Minna Correctional Centre jailbreak seven years ago, alongside 31 suspected thugs, during a series of coordinated sting operations across the state capital.
The escapee, identified as 35-year-old Mohammed Yahaya of Angwan Sarki, Minna, had been serving a sentence for culpable homicide before fleeing custody during the 2018 prison break. He was captured during the latest police raids, which also led to the arrest of several notorious gang leaders.
Police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the arrests in a statement on Monday, explaining that the operations were conducted between Saturday and Sunday across several identified criminal hideouts, including Limawa, Makera, Kwangila, Central Roundabout, Railway Station, Ogbomosho Street, Abdulsalam Quarters, PZ Area, Angwan-Kaje, New Market, Sabon-Gari, Kuta Road, and Angwan-Sarki.
Exhibits recovered during the raids include several wraps of suspected cannabis, shisha pots, cutlasses, and other illicit substances.
SP Abiodun said all the suspects are currently under investigation, adding that arrangements are underway to return the recaptured inmate to the correctional facility.
