The ‘wild west’ era of taxi pricing in Kenya is nearing its end as the Ministry of Transport moves to rein in years of fare wars in the industry.
A new work plan shows the State is developing a national pricing policy that will, for the first time, set a mandatory formula for every ride you take. This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a total overhaul of how Uber, Bolt, and conventional taxis charge for their services.
The Ministry of Transport says this gap has fanned chaos, leading to price undercutting and low earnings that leave drivers unable to even cover basic insurance.
Data by the ministry shows that about 35,000 drivers are presently enrolled on the ride-hailing platforms in Kenya. On average, they collectively complete approximately 175,000 rides/trips per day across all network companies nationwide.
