Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has showered praise on Victor Osimhen, describing the striker as the team’s “big boy” following his outstanding performance in Nigeria’s 4-0 victory over Benin Republic in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Osimhen netted a hat-trick in the crucial win at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, keeping Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the World Cup alive and securing their place in the playoff round next month.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel commended the Napoli striker’s leadership and ability to rise under pressure.
“Our World Cup dream is still alive. I said those two games [Lesotho and Benin Republic] were must-win, and we did that,” Mikel said.
“Credit to the boys, and of course, the main man — Victor Osimhen. He has single-handedly kept us alive. When the pressure is on, the big boys step up, and that is exactly what he has done. He is the big boy in that team right now, and we all need him.”
Nigeria will now turn their attention to the World Cup playoffs slated for November.
