The Taifa Stars’ tactical discipline and refusal to “park the bus” against the Super Eagles have bolstered the coach’s confidence as they prepare for a must-win East African derby.
With both Tanzania and Uganda losing their opening fixtures, their upcoming head-to-head clash is effectively an elimination match.
Gamondi emphasized that his team’s performance against Nigeria proved they belong on the big stage. By attacking and maintaining possession against a star-studded Nigerian side, the Argentine coach believes the Taifa Stars have shed the “underdog” mentality that plagued them in previous editions (1980, 2019, 2023).
“I think we surprised so many people because they thought we would come here to pack the bus, which is not my philosophy,” Gamondi noted. “When you see the gap in quality and value… our performance was great.”
While Nigeria and Tunisia battle for the top spot in Fès, all eyes in East Africa will be on Rabat. Uganda, led by coach Paul Put, will be desperate to fix the defensive lapses that saw them concede three goals to Tunisia. For Tanzania, the focus will be on clinical finishing—specifically from Charles M’Mombwa, who has now scored three goals in his last two international appearances.
