Former Manchester United forward Michael Owen has criticised Joshua Zirkzee following the club’s 1-0 loss to Everton in the Premier League on Monday night. Owen expressed disappointment in the Dutch striker’s overall display, insisting that Zirkzee failed to offer any real spark during the encounter at Old Trafford.
Manchester United struggled despite having a one-man advantage for most of the match, after Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye was sent off in the first half for slapping teammate Michael Keane. The setback did not deter the visitors, who went on to seal all three points through a well-taken first-half strike from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Speaking after the match on Premier League Productions, Owen admitted he was far from impressed with Zirkzee’s contribution, especially on a night when United desperately needed attacking inspiration.
“I can’t watch him and get excited, I must admit,” Owen said.
“Cunha missing today was a big blow. He [Zirkzee] was the closest to scoring for Man Utd but they are almost resorting to playing like this with hopeful crosses because he is in there.”
Owen’s assessment adds to the growing scrutiny on Manchester United’s attacking options, as the team continues to struggle for consistency in front of goal. The defeat further intensifies pressure on the squad as they attempt to recover from a disappointing result against a 10-man Everton side.
