Former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen has tipped Michael Carrick to replace under-pressure boss Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.
Meulensteen, who worked under Sir Alex Ferguson, believes Carrick’s familiarity with the club makes him a strong candidate.
“Michael Carrick might be the obvious option if Ruben Amorim is to go,” Meulensteen told BetVictor, as quoted by Metro.
“Obviously Michael still knows quite a few players that were there when he was there. So he’s still got some good inside information. He obviously knows the club. He knows what’s expected.”
Carrick, who had a short spell as United’s interim manager in 2021, was sacked by Middlesbrough in June after three seasons in charge.
Meulensteen also suggested that former Red Devils’ boss Jose Mourinho, currently unemployed, could be considered for a return.
