If you’re still using Messenger on your computer, you might want to start saying goodbye. Meta is officially phasing out its desktop Messenger apps for Windows and macOS, with both already gone from app stores and full removal coming in December.
According to a Meta support page, first spotted by Apple Insider, Mac users will have 60 days to continue using the Messenger app before it’s fully deprecated and access is blocked. On Windows, existing users are being notified that the desktop app will no longer be available after December 14th.
Once the desktop apps are removed, Windows users will need to switch to the Facebook app or use Messenger on the web, while macOS users will only be able to access Messenger through a browser.
Meta is also reportedly planning a similar transition for WhatsApp, moving from its native Windows app to a web wrapper version, a move that seems aimed at simplifying development across its desktop platforms.
Messenger has been a staple of Facebook’s communication tools for more than a decade, offering video calls, file sharing, and integration with Instagram DMs. Its standalone desktop versions, launched in 2020, were part of Meta’s push to make messaging more accessible outside the browser.
