Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, has reportedly laid off about 600 employees from its artificial intelligence division, marking the latest effort by the tech giant to streamline operations following years of aggressive expansion.
According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and other US media outlets, the job cuts will not impact the company’s TBD Lab, an elite research hub established by CEO Mark Zuckerberg that has rapidly grown by recruiting top AI experts from rivals such as OpenAI and Apple, often with lucrative pay packages.
Instead, the layoffs are said to affect teams focused on AI products and infrastructure, part of a wider effort to improve efficiency and reduce overlap without slowing work on Meta’s most advanced AI projects.
The Wall Street Journal reported that some of the affected employees could be reassigned to other departments within the company rather than being let go entirely.
Meanwhile, the New York Times described the restructuring as a bid to tackle “organizational bloat” after Meta’s recent hiring surge to expand its AI capabilities.
Both publications cited an internal memo from Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, who reportedly said the move would simplify workflows, adding that “fewer conversations will be required to make a decision.”
