The immediate past Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has honoured an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with an ongoing investigation.
This development comes just days after the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the temporary freezing of four Jaiz Bank accounts linked to Kyari over alleged fraud-related activities.
The order was issued by Justice Emeka Nwite following an ex parte motion filed by the EFCC’s counsel, Ogechi Ujam.
Details of the investigation remain unclear, but EFCC sources say the ongoing probe relates to financial transactions involving the NNPCL during Kyari’s tenure.
The EFCC’s probe aligns with wider scrutiny of NNPCL’s financial records after the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, chaired by Aliyu Wadada, raised concerns about alleged discrepancies involving trillions of naira in the company’s audited financial statements from 2017 to 2023.
NNPCL’s finance team has just seven days to respond to 11 queries raised by the Senate Committee following its audit review.
