Police in Mbarara city have launched investigations into an attempted robbery and attack on the Rwizi regional police commander, Alfred Bangambaki.
According to Rwizi region police spokesperson Samson Kasasira, the attack occurred on Saturday night when machete-wielding assailants riding on a motorcycle allegedly ambushed the commander at his home in Mbaguta Cell, Ruharo Ward, Mbarara City-North Division at around 3.30 am.
Bangambaki was returning home in the company of Areeba Munda when the attackers confronted him at his gate. Kasasira said the thugs attempted to hack the commander with a panga, shattering the car windows in the process.
Bangambaki reportedly fought back and discharged his firearm, incapacitating one of the assailants, prompting the others to flee on their motorcycle. Areeba sustained facial injuries caused by glass fragments from the damaged vehicle.
Badru Nkabeiha, the defence secretary of Mbaguta Cell, said the deceased suspect was not known in the area. His body was taken to Mbarara regional referral hospital mortuary for postmortem as police work to establish his identity.
Kasasira said operations are underway to track down the remaining suspects. The incident comes barely weeks after Vianney Kemigisha, a candidate for the Bushenyi District Woman MP seat, was attacked and injured by unknown assailants at her gate in Survey Cell, Andrews, also within Mbarara City-North Division, raising fresh concerns over rising criminal attacks in the region.
