France captain Kylian Mbappe is closing in on history after moving to within five goals of becoming the country’s all-time top scorer.
The Real Madrid forward found the net as Les Bleus cruised to a 3-0 victory over Azerbaijan in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Parc des Princes on Friday night.
Mbappe opened the scoring before Adrien Rabiot and Florian Thauvin sealed the comfortable win for Didier Deschamps’ side, who remain unbeaten in their qualifying campaign.
The goal took Mbappe’s international tally to 53 in 93 appearances, leaving him just five goals shy of Olivier Giroud’s record of 57 goals in 137 games — the highest in French football history.
Behind Mbappe on France’s all-time scoring chart are Thierry Henry (51 goals in 123 games), Antoine Griezmann (44 goals in 137 games), and Michel Platini (41 goals in 72 games).
Still only 26 years old, Mbappe looks well on course to surpass Giroud’s milestone in the coming months, cementing his place among France’s greatest-ever forwards.
