Former Italian defensive stalwart Marco Materazzi has suggested that Pep Guardiola possess a unique “insider” advantage in the burgeoning rivalry between Manchester City and Arsenal. Speaking in a recent feature with Hajper, the World Cup winner argued that the years Mikel Arteta spent as Guardiola’s primary lieutenant at the Etihad have left the City manager with a comprehensive blueprint of his apprentice’s tactical philosophy. According to Materazzi, this deep familiarity allows Guardiola to anticipate and neutralize the Gunners’ strategies more effectively than any other coach in world football.
This assessment follows a high-stakes weekend at Wembley, where Manchester City outmaneuvered Arsenal in a 2–0 victory to claim the 2026 Carabao Cup. The result effectively ended the Gunners’ hopes of a quadruple, but the North London side remains very much in contention for a prestigious treble, consisting of the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. While acknowledging Arsenal’s technical quality—citing their recent 3–1 away victory against Inter Milan at the San Siro as evidence—Materazzi warned that talent alone might not be enough to overcome the “master” in a sustained trophy hunt.
Reflecting on the relationship between the two managers and the challenges ahead for the North London outfit, Materazzi noted:
“I think Arsenal are a very good team. They play very well. But their manager was the right-hand man of Pep Guardiola, so Pep knows him best. He knows everything about Mikel Arteta so he knows how to stop them. Arsenal will run for the title. I saw them play against Inter. They played very well. They are just a little bit young. They do not have the experience, but I think they have the opportunity to win, and I think they can win the treble.”
Materazzi further emphasized that the path to a treble is often paved by factors beyond tactical preparation, including physical durability and an element of fortune. With Arsenal currently maintaining a nine-point cushion at the summit of the Premier League table, the veteran defender insisted that the margin for error has now vanished. He suggested that every remaining fixture in their calendar must be approached with the psychological intensity of a final if they are to successfully navigate the pressure from a resurgent Manchester City.
Outlining the requirements for a historic campaign finish, Materazzi added:
“How can Arsenal win the treble? You have to be lucky. You have to be focused. You must stay fit because each game from now until the end of the season is a final. You have to be perfect in any game.”
As the 2025/26 season enters its final two months, the spotlight remains on whether Arteta can introduce enough variation to surprise his former mentor. While the Carabao Cup loss served as a setback, the Gunners’ perfect record in the Champions League league phase suggests they have the ceiling to compete at the highest level. For Materazzi, the outcome of this seasonal duel will ultimately depend on whether Arsenal’s youthful energy can overcome Guardiola’s tactical familiarity and the rigorous demands of a multi-front title charge.
