Rising concerns regarding the safety of electricity utility workers have significantly intensified. following a vicious assault in Nasarawa State, where a staff member of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) was brutally attacked while performing his duties.
The incident took place on February 10, 2026, around 1:00 PM, involving Mr. Abdul Ishaka, a Customer Representative Officer (CRO) based at the Karshi Service Center, Masaka Business Office.
Reports indicate that the attack was orchestrated by a customer, Mrs. Laraba Waziri, who allegedly mobilized her son and his associates to confront Mr. Ishaka after he challenged her regarding the illegal reconnection of her power supply.
The customer had reportedly “hung” her service wire following disconnection due to non-payment, with her account reflecting an outstanding debt of ₦272,499.47.
The assault left Mr. Ishaka unconscious, necessitating immediate medical attention. He was first taken to Emmanuel Baptist Clinic for emergency care before being transferred to the Federal Medical Center in Keffi, where he is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment.
In response to the attack, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) intervened directly, instructing the Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police to expedite the investigation.
The primary suspect has been apprehended and brought before the Senior Magistrate Court, Auta Balefi, where she has been remanded in police custody pending the capture of additional suspects.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing operations is actively supervising the case, ensuring all legal protocols are followed, with a strong emphasis on a prompt remand to deliver swift justice.
The management at AEDC has condemned the assault unequivocally, asserting that they will advocate for the maximum legal repercussions against those involved in the attack on their personnel.
Industry stakeholders are reiterating that electricity theft and the assault on enforcement officers are serious criminal offenses under Nigerian law. They caution that such violent acts not only jeopardize the safety of utility workers but also undermine infrastructure protection initiatives and hinder effective service delivery.
The prompt actions taken by the Nigeria Police Force have been commended, sending a clear signal that attacks on utility personnel will not be tolerated and will be met with decisive legal action.
