Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mary Njoku has called on women to take ownership of their happiness, warning against placing emotional fulfillment in the hands of others.
In a post shared on Instagram, Njoku emphasised the importance of self-love and personal well-being, particularly for mothers who often prioritise everyone else above themselves.
“Stop outsourcing your happiness! Love yourself,” she wrote. “Never put the responsibility for your happiness on someone else; you will always come last if you put them first.”
The actress encouraged mothers to balance devotion to their children with care for themselves. According to her, taking breaks, resting and occasionally being “a little selfish” are not acts of neglect but necessary steps toward maintaining emotional health.
Njoku also reflected on the fleeting nature of life, noting that no one is indispensable. She said people often overestimate how much others depend on them, pointing out that life goes on even after someone is gone.
“The people you think can’t live without you? They will go on,” she wrote, urging followers to value themselves while they can.
Her message adds to ongoing conversations around self-care, mental well-being and the pressures faced by women juggling family and personal responsibilities.
