Actress and filmmaker Mary Njoku has shared her confusion over what she describes as a growing disconnect between impressive CVs and the difficulty companies face in finding truly capable employees.
In a post shared on Instagram, Njoku observed that while many job seekers appear highly qualified on paper, the reality often changes during interviews. According to her, something frequently “doesn’t connect” once candidates are assessed beyond their resumes.
She noted that CVs today often look polished and convincing, yet fail to reflect the actual depth of a person’s skills or experience. Njoku described modern resumes as “marketing documents” rather than honest representations of competence.
The filmmaker explained that job titles are frequently exaggerated, responsibilities are framed in aspirational terms, and presentation has taken precedence over substance. She stressed that the issue is not laziness or lack of intelligence, as many people are genuinely putting in effort.
“Every day, I see people without jobs. Every day, I see impressive CVs. And every day I see companies struggling to hire good people. And I’m genuinely confused,” she wrote.
Njoku concluded that there is a serious mismatch between what looks good on paper and what employers encounter in real-life interactions, describing it as a gap that has developed “somewhere in the middle” of the hiring process.
