Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has described Liam Delap’s red card as “very stupid” after the striker’s late dismissal took some shine off the Blues’ dramatic 4–3 Carabao Cup victory over Wolves on Wednesday night.
Delap, who was making his first appearance in 10 weeks following a hamstring injury, was sent off just 26 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.
According to reports, the 22-year-old picked up two yellow cards in quick succession — first for pushing Yerson Mosquera, and moments later for barging into Emmanuel Agbadou.
The dismissal means Delap will miss Saturday’s London derby against Tottenham, with João Pedro already a fitness concern for Maresca’s side.
When asked if Delap deserved the red card, Maresca didn’t mince words.
“Absolutely, yes. Stupid foul. We can avoid that,” the Chelsea boss said.
