Renowned transfer authority Fabrizio Romano has disclosed that Manchester United declined the opportunity to acquire Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi during the January 2024 transfer window. Speaking on his “Here We Go” podcast, Romano detailed how the Red Devils had the chance to secure the Nigerian international in what he described as a “low-cost” arrangement. Despite the player’s strong desire to join the ranks at Old Trafford, the Premier League giants opted against the move.
Following Manchester United’s immediate rejection, the former Leicester City standout eventually shifted his career to the Turkish Süper Lig. Ndidi completed a permanent transfer to Beşiktaş, where he has since established himself as a central figure and vice-captain. Romano emphasized that the midfielder viewed the potential move to Manchester as a priority before the English club decided to focus on other internal options.
Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Romano provided specific details regarding the club’s stance during his podcast session:
“I can tell you that Wilfred Ndidi, former midfielder from Leicester, now at Besiktas, was offered as an opportunity to Man United. A low-cost opportunity, the player was very keen on the move but Man United decided immediately not to proceed.”
The decision by the United hierarchy reportedly stemmed from a desire to integrate existing young talent like Kobbie Mainoo rather than bringing in veteran reinforcements. Consequently, Ndidi moved to Istanbul in a deal worth approximately €8 million plus performance-related add-ons. He now plays a pivotal role for the Black Eagles while Manchester United continues to look toward the summer market for long-term midfield solutions.
