Following a deadly Christmas Eve attack on a mosque in Maiduguri, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised fresh concerns over the country’s deteriorating security situation.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Emembong, the opposition party condemned the explosion at Gamboru Market in Borno State, describing the incident as a tragic reminder of the persistent insecurity facing Nigerians.
The PDP said the protection of lives and property remains the most basic responsibility of government, stressing that no citizen should lose their life while engaged in religious worship.
The party accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government of failing to decisively address security challenges, urging authorities to stop politicising national security and instead take concrete action.
According to the PDP, continued attacks on places of worship not only violate Nigerians’ constitutional right to freedom of religion but also create widespread fear that threatens social cohesion and national unity.
The party called on both federal and state governments to urgently deploy effective and intelligence-driven security measures to protect citizens, especially during the festive period.
It warned that repeated assurances without visible results were no longer acceptable, insisting that the growing insecurity must be confronted with urgency, seriousness and clear strategies capable of restoring public confidence.
