World football superstar Lionel Messi played a starring role as Argentina secured a 2-0 victory over Angola in an international friendly on Friday in Luanda.
Messi, who plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, created Argentina’s opening goal with a precise assist to Lautaro Martinez in the 44th minute. Later in the match, the roles were reversed as Martinez set up Messi, who calmly converted into the far corner in the 82nd minute. Both players were substituted in the latter stages of the second half.
The result was widely anticipated, given Argentina’s second-place position in the FIFA world rankings, 87 places above Angola.
The friendly also served as part of celebrations marking Angola’s 50th independence anniversary, held at the national stadium in the capital, Luanda, honoring the southern African nation’s former status as a Portuguese colony.
