President of Liberia, Joseph Boakai, has expressed strong confidence that Imo State can achieve far-reaching transformation through sustained investment in innovation and visionary leadership.
Boakai made the remark on Thursday in Owerri, the state capital, while speaking at the 2025 Imo Economic Summit hosted by Governor Hope Uzodimma. The summit drew high-profile leaders and global development figures from around the world.
“Innovation can become the engine that drives Imo’s transformation,” the Liberian President declared, emphasising that African states must embrace new ideas and modern solutions to accelerate development.
He added that for Africa to truly advance, elections must go beyond being peaceful—they must translate into tangible development outcomes for citizens. “If Africa must progress, elections must not only be peaceful; they must also deliver development dividends to the people who elect their leaders. The lives of the people must be improved,” he said.
Drawing parallels between his country and Imo State, Boakai noted shared values of resilience, peace, and a commitment to good governance.
“As I stand here today, I am reminded that Liberia and Imo have more in common than just our geographic space in West Africa. We share a history of resilience; we share a desire for peace; we share a commitment to good governance; and we share the belief that Africa can rise on its own terms through its own efforts,” he stated.
Boakai highlighted Liberia’s recent election to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, describing it as an honour for Nigeria, Liberia, and the entire African continent.
He said the development underscores the capacity of African nations to play constructive roles in global stability and post-conflict recovery.
The Liberian leader expressed optimism that Imo State and Liberia can forge stronger ties through regional partnerships focused on economic development, governance reforms, and democratic consolidation.
President Bola Tinubu was represented at the summit by Vice President Kashim Shettima. Other notable attendees included former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, business magnate Aliko Dangote, Minister of Finance Wale Edun, several state governors, and other distinguished guests.
