Chelsea Football Club has initiated an accelerated search for a new head coach after Enzo Maresca’s tenure concluded abruptly on Thursday. Liam Rosenior, currently the manager of Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, has moved to the top of the shortlist to lead the West London club. Maresca, 45, vacated his position following a single season at the helm, a period marked by significant friction between the Italian tactician and the club’s executive leadership.
Despite his prior success in guiding Leicester City to the Premier League, Maresca’s departure forces the Blues to once again re-evaluate their strategic direction.
BBC Sport confirmed on Friday that the 41-year-old Rosenior holds a commanding lead in the race to occupy the Stamford Bridge dugout, though the club continues to monitor a select group of alternative candidates. The Englishman’s current role at Strasbourg offers a unique advantage, as the French club shares the same ownership under the BlueCo investment consortium that acquired Chelsea in 2022. This existing organizational link reportedly bolsters Rosenior’s standing with the Chelsea board as they seek a seamless transition.
“The Englishman currently manages Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, who are owned by BlueCo the same investment consortium that purchased Chelsea in 2022, a link that is believed to strengthen his candidacy,” BBC Sport said.
The former Hull City manager enjoys robust internal support within the club’s hierarchy, who value his progressive coaching philosophy. As speculation intensifies regarding a move to London, Strasbourg officials have already begun identifying potential successors to ensure their own season remains on track. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s recruitment team is also evaluating Porto’s Francesco Farioli as a viable alternative should negotiations with Rosenior encounter hurdles.
The ownership group remains committed to a data-centric and visionary recruitment process, prioritizing a leader who aligns with their long-term developmental goals. This latest search follows a comprehensive vetting process in 2024 that saw the club consider various high-profile managers. Previous targets included Roberto De Zerbi, Kieran McKenna, and Thomas Frank—the latter of whom recently joined Tottenham Hotspur. While Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Fulham’s Marco Silva have previously appeared on Chelsea’s radar, their current status in this specific recruitment cycle remains unconfirmed.
