Enyimba interim head coach Lawrence Ukaegbu has pointed to defensive lapses as the primary reason for his side’s 3–2 defeat to El-Kanemi Warriors on Sunday. The nine-time Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions were edged out in a five-goal spectacle at the El-Kanemi Sports Centre in Maiduguri, stalling the momentum they had built following a recent win over Kwara United.
Despite the loss, Ukaegbu maintained that the “Borno Army” were fortunate to take all three points, suggesting that the People’s Elephant were the better side for large spells of the game.
“It was a good game but for the errors at the back which allowed them cheap goals,” Ukaegbu told Sportslighthub. “I think they were lucky to escape defeat because if we had converted the chances we created, it would have been the other way round.”
The encounter was a see-saw affair where Enyimba’s clinical finishing was offset by uncharacteristic mistakes in their own half. The defeat leaves Enyimba in 8th position on the NPFL table with 23 points, as they struggle to close the gap on the current top four.
