Federal lawmakers, CSOs, tax experts and legal practitioners in Nigeria are scheduled to hold high-level engagements in Enugu and Kano to monitor, guide and enhance the rollout of Nigeria’s new tax regime.
Scheduled for January 17 and 19, the meetings will bring together stakeholders from political, professional, and civil society sectors to build consensus, improve public understanding, and strengthen institutional cooperation around the reforms, which are seen as vital for economic recovery and fiscal sustainability.
Convener of the initiative, Hon. Midala Usman, said the roundtables, themed “Door to Economic Revolution Comes with Temporary Discomfort but Sustainable Development and Gains”, will provide a platform for lawmakers, CSOs, youth groups, lawyers and small businesses to discuss effective implementation and public acceptance of the new tax laws.
The reforms, effective January 1, 2026, include the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act 2025, and Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act 2025, introducing 50 exemptions and reliefs for low-income earners, average taxpayers and small businesses.
Usman said Enugu and Kano were chosen to ensure regional inclusiveness, with discussions focusing on tax fairness, SME compliance, legal safeguards, and accountability in revenue usage. Civil society representatives emphasized transparency, civic education, and independent monitoring to build trust, while legal experts will advise on compliance and taxpayer rights.
The coalition cautioned against false narratives and urged Nigerians to participate constructively, with a closing communiqué set to outline key recommendations, monitoring plans and timelines for ongoing collaboration with government agencies.
