Renowned Nigerian reggae legend Majek Fashek, who passed away on June 7, 2020, has been honoured posthumously by the Artists Managers Association of Nigeria (AMAN) during its 30th anniversary celebration at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.
The recognition marks the first award presented to the late musician since his death. Accepting the honour on his behalf, Majek’s long-time manager and CEO of Miracle Day Music, Omenka Uzoma Day, expressed deep gratitude to the organisers, led by AMAN president Collins Enebeli (MAVIN Grandpa).
Uzoma revealed that he cancelled an ongoing tour in New Zealand and Australia to attend the ceremony, describing the award as a significant tribute to Majek’s legacy. He praised the late singer for laying the foundation for today’s globally recognised Nigerian musicians.
“Majek paved the way for the musicians making the nation proud today,” he said. Uzoma also clarified long-held public misconceptions, stating that Majek “was never involved in hard drugs,” adding that he only smoked weed and consumed alcohol.
Sharing emotional reflections, Uzoma spoke about the 12 years he lived with Majek across the United States, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Nigeria. He noted that he still keeps personal items including a bell Majek gave him in 2018, while the singer’s other belongings remain stored in London.
He thanked Wizkid’s manager, Sunday Are, and members of the Spirit of Love crew for their support. Uzoma also mentioned that Majek’s son, Randy Fashek, has extended heartfelt appreciation to AMAN and to all Nigerians and Africans who continue to honour the music icon’s legacy.
Uzoma’s new single, ‘Afrika Liberation,’ is currently gaining traction, serving as a further tribute to the spirit of African unity and resilience that Majek championed throughout his career.
