Health authorities have raised concerns over a surge in Lassa fever cases in Nigeria, warning that the outbreak is spreading across parts of the country.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has continued to monitor the situation and coordinate interventions nationwide, confirming that infections and fatalities are rising, with several states reporting new cases amid ongoing surveillance and response efforts.
At the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jalingo, Taraba State, officials confirmed that 35 patients have died from the virus in what they described as one of the most severe outbreaks recorded at the facility in recent years.
Hospital authorities said 226 suspected cases were admitted, with 95 confirmed positive, while 20 patients have recovered and been discharged.
The Head of Clinical Services at the hospital, Dr Suleiman Kirim, also disclosed that three staff members; a doctor, a nurse and a driver, contracted the infection. While the doctor and nurse recovered, the driver died.
Authorities have urged residents to maintain proper hygiene, ensure clean surroundings and prevent contact with rodents, which are the primary carriers of the virus, as containment measures continue.
