Ghanaian musician Ladsmid Nathaniel Owusu, popularly known as Lasmid, has stirred fresh controversy online after claiming that Ghana has played a major role in boosting Nigerian music on the global stage.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, the Bad Boy crooner said several Nigerian hits first gained traction in Ghana before becoming nationwide successes. According to him, Ghanaian fans have long been instrumental in amplifying Afrobeats across West Africa.
“We love Nigerians so much, even more than ourselves. If a Nigerian drops a song, it will first blow in Ghana before it blows in Nigeria,” Lasmid said. “Most Nigerian songs blew in Ghana before blowing back home.”
He cited Spyro’s hit track “Who’s Your Guy” as one example, claiming the song became a massive success in Ghana before gaining widespread attention in Nigeria.
“The song ‘Who’s Your Guy’ by Spyro blew in Ghana before Nigeria. The love Ghana has for Nigeria has always been there,” he added.
Lasmid’s remarks have reignited the long-running Ghana vs Naija music rivalry, with fans from both countries debating which industry has had a greater influence on Afrobeats’ rise.
The debate recalls a similar controversy sparked a few years ago when Nigerian artist Mr Eazi claimed that Ghanaian sounds had shaped the evolution of Nigerian music, a statement that drew heavy backlash from Nigerian fans.
Lasmid’s comments have since gone viral, sparking lively discussions across social media platforms about the intertwined growth and mutual influence of both West African music scenes.
