LaLiga has officially cancelled its plan to stage the Barcelona vs Villarreal fixture in Miami, USA, which was initially scheduled for December 20 at the Hard Rock Stadium.
The match was set to make history as the first-ever European league game played outside the continent. However, the Spanish topflight has scrapped the proposal following mounting criticism and logistical concerns from players, clubs, and football authorities.
In a statement on Tuesday, LaLiga said:
“Following discussions with the promoter of the official LaLiga match in Miami, the latter has announced its decision to cancel the event due to the uncertainty surrounding Spain in recent weeks.
LaLiga deeply regrets that this project, which represented a historic and unparalleled opportunity for the internationalization of Spanish football, cannot go ahead.”
The decision marks the latest setback in LaLiga’s long-running ambition to host competitive matches abroad — a move aimed at expanding the league’s global reach, particularly in the North American market.
