Nigerian filmmaker and author Laju Iren premiered her latest movie, Onobiren, at a colourful event held at EbonyLife Cinemas.
The premiere, held on March 1, 2026, brought together celebrities, public figures and film enthusiasts in a celebration of South-South Nigerian heritage.
South-South Culture Takes Centre Stage
Organisers adopted the theme “South-South Royalty,” turning the venue into a vibrant display of Niger Delta traditions.
Guests arrived in elaborate outfits inspired by royal fashion from the region, highlighting the cultural influence that inspired the film.
Among the notable attendees were Orode Uduaghan, media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, and Emmanuel Iren, the husband of the film’s executive producer.
Other guests included Michael Ejoor, Juliana Olayode, Blessing Nze, Ojoma Ochai, Ruby Akubueze, Desmond Bryce and Amanda Dara.
Film Highlights Women’s Stories
Speaking at the premiere, Iren explained that the project was inspired by her background and a desire to highlight underrepresented voices in storytelling.
As an Itsekiri woman, she said the film reflects her commitment to telling stories from communities that do not always receive wide representation in mainstream media.
Some scenes were filmed in her grandmother’s village, Koko, a location she described as an important part of the film’s cultural identity.
Iren noted that showcasing diverse traditions and perspectives helps enrich African storytelling and broaden representation within Nollywood.
