The Lagos State Government has expanded its ongoing healthcare outreach programme to include members of the Lagos State Police Command, targeting 1,000 officers in the first phase. The initiative, which originally focused on commercial drivers across the state, is part of broader efforts to support the health and welfare of security personnel.
The launch took place on Friday at the State Police Command in Ikeja, where the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation and Logistics, Adekoya Hasan, explained that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had previously approved a healthcare package for 10,000 drivers, which has now been extended to police officers.
Hasan noted that the programme complements ongoing welfare initiatives by the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.
The outreach provides free eye examinations, prescription glasses, and general medical checks. Officers are first registered and issued identification numbers before undergoing screening, which includes vital checks such as blood pressure and blood sugar tests.
Four eye-testing stations were set up to ensure a smooth and efficient process. Officers diagnosed with vision challenges receive prescription glasses at no cost, while beneficiaries also receive customised Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards and other support packages.
Participants praised the programme for its timeliness and impact. Bello Adewale said it was his first time using prescription glasses and that the tests had greatly improved his vision. Yabo Obarasha described the screening as a valuable intervention, noting that she can now read clearly without difficulty.
The Lagos State Government emphasised that the initiative is part of its commitment to enhancing the health, wellbeing, and efficiency of the police force, recognising their critical role in maintaining public safety across the state.
