A total of 56 youth football squads begin their quest for glory as the 10th edition of the Taiwo Afolabi U-17 Football Tournament launches this Saturday in Lagos. This landmark anniversary event, organized by the Lagos State Grassroots Soccer Association (LSGSA) and sponsored by SIFAX Group, cements its status as a premier fixture in the state’s youth sports calendar.
The competition features a diverse lineup including 32 male and 24 female teams, providing a massive stage for emerging talent across the metropolitan area.
The annual championship serves as a tribute to Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, the Chairman of SIFAX Group, who has championed the cause of youth development for over a decade. Throughout its history, the tournament has successfully transitioned numerous young athletes from local sandlots to professional football environments. Organizers have designated the Ojo Oniyun Sports Centre in Ebute Metta and the Anthony Mini Stadium in Gbagada to host the preliminary rounds, while the prestigious Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan will host the grand finale on May 2, 2026.
During a media briefing held to inaugurate the event, LSGSA Assistant Secretary Afuka Abu emphasized the tournament’s lasting impact on the local football ecosystem. He noted that the rigorous structure of the competition helps instill the necessary discipline for players to reach elite levels of the sport.
“This tournament has consistently provided young players with the structure, exposure and discipline they need to progress to higher levels of the game. Many of our participants have moved on to national teams and professional clubs, and that remains our goal — to give every talented child a genuine opportunity,” Abu said.
