The Lagos State Government has ordered the demolition of the old Great Nigerian Insurance (GNI) building on Lagos Island after a massive fire left the multi-storey structure severely damaged and unsafe.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who inspected the site on Thursday, said a technical committee, led by the Commissioner for Special Duties, will determine the safest approach for demolition, expected to begin within days.
“The building has sustained extensive damage, including partial collapses, posing a serious risk to neighbouring properties and residents”, he said. The fire also affected two adjacent buildings severely and partially damaged three others.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the 24-25 storey structure had largely been converted into storage space, increasing fire risks. “The fire reportedly started around the fourth and fifth floors. Our first responders prevented fatalities”, he added, confirming that seven to ten people were rescued and treated by Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
Emergency teams remain on site containing residual flames and smoke. The governor urged traders and business owners to strengthen fire safety, warning that the dry harmattan season heightens fire risks.
The Federal Fire Service said operations are ongoing due to the scale of the blaze and the proximity of nearby buildings. Investigations into the cause and assessment of losses will begin once the fire is fully contained.
