In a bid to expand access to justice, the Lagos State Judiciary has enhanced its virtual court hearing system, allowing litigants and lawyers to participate remotely with greater efficiency.
The update was highlighted on Tuesday by the CEO of Global T&T New Solutions, Musbau Famuyiwa, at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch, January knowledge-sharing session.
Speaking on “Virtual/Remote Court Hearing Made Simple: Saving Lawyers Time, Cost, Energy and Stress”, Famuyiwa explained that the system, powered by the Global Remote Court (GRC) platform, enables courts to conduct proceedings fully or partially online. Judges, lawyers, litigants, and witnesses can now participate remotely, reducing logistical challenges.
Virtual court proceedings were first adopted in Lagos State in 2020, with a Practice Direction issued by the High Court. A landmark virtual hearing occurred on May 27, 2020, when an Ikeja High Court delivered a criminal judgment, sentencing Olalekan Hameed to death for robbery and murder, with full participation of all parties via the platform.
Under the current procedure, parties seeking virtual hearings file a motion or oral application. Once approved and payment is made, cases are scheduled, and participants receive secure links to join.
Famuyiwa highlighted benefits including reduced time and cost, faster case resolution, easier access for persons with disabilities and out-of-jurisdiction litigants, and improved security and transparency. Virtual hearings now cover criminal trials, family and magistrates’ courts, customary courts, and case management conferences.
Participants are advised to observe court decorum, join on time, use identifiable names, and ensure stable internet connectivity.
NBA Ikeja Branch Chairman, Adeniyi Quadri, praised the programme as timely and relevant, emphasizing the importance of continuous training to help lawyers adapt to technological advancements and improve access to justice.
