One person has died and 26 others have been rescued after a two-storey building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of Lagos on Monday morning, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency received a distress call at 12:11 a.m. and immediately mobilised emergency responders to the scene at Coast Street, Oyingbo.
“Under the watch of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, all emergency teams, including members of the Local Emergency Management Committee, moved swiftly to the scene”, Oke-Osanyintolu told journalists.
He said 21 victims were taken to various general hospitals, where they are receiving free treatment, while five others were treated on-site by the LASEMA ambulance team and discharged. One fatality was recorded, and the body has been deposited in the mortuary.
The Permanent Secretary added that rescue operations were ongoing with precision and coordination to avoid further casualties. He explained that light-duty equipment was being used in inner areas while heavy machinery was deployed in outer quadrants.
Oke-Osanyintolu assured Lagos residents that the state government remains fully in control of the situation and committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all those affected.
