The Lagos State House of Assembly has approved the University of Medicine and Health Sciences Bill, marking a major step toward expanding the state’s medical education and research capacity.
The bill was passed into law on Thursday, 20 November 2025, following its third reading. The legislation aims to address the shortage of medical professionals and strengthen indigenous research capabilities, providing a boost to the state’s healthcare sector.
Key members, including Adams Noheem, Mojeed Fatai, and Richard Kasunmu, presided over the final stages of the bill, which will now be transmitted to the Governor for assent.
The proceedings also highlighted growing national insecurity. Lawmakers observed a one-minute silence for victims of recent violent incidents, including the killing of an Army General, the abduction of children in Kebbi State, and a brutal attack on a church in Ekiti State.
House Speaker, Mudasiru Obasa expressed deep concern over these security challenges and emphasized the need for urgent action. The House resolved to formally write to state authorities and security agencies, urging intensified efforts to curb violence and ensure the protection of citizens.
