The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stinging rebuttal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar following his recent assertions that Nigeria’s democracy faces an “existential threat.” In a definitive statement, the ruling party characterized Atiku’s rhetoric as an ironic and convenient pivot for a political figure whose career has frequently tested the limits of the nation’s democratic structures. The APC noted that the current administration remains focused on constitutional order while the opposition engages in alarmist narratives to mask its own declining influence.
Lagos APC Spokesman Mogaji Seye Oladejo emphasized that these doomsday prophecies originate from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as a fragmented political entity lacking a clear ideological foundation. The party argued that the ADC serves as a temporary shelter for a fragile coalition of ambitious politicians who prioritize personal presidential aspirations over national stability. According to the APC, the internal contradictions and unchecked ambitions within the ADC suggest an inevitable collapse of the alliance rather than any true defense of democratic principles.
“There is no need to be confrontational with teammates, opponents or match officials. At this stage, mental resilience and psychological balance are crucial to achieving the team’s set goal,” the statement noted, referencing the need for the opposition to maintain composure.
The ruling party reaffirmed that democratic institutions in Nigeria have operated effectively since the transition on May 29, 2023. The APC highlighted the independence of the judiciary in settling electoral disputes and the legislature’s continued oversight as evidence of a healthy democracy. They maintained that the freedom of the opposition to protest and litigate openly contradicts any claims of a “democratic siege.” The Lagos APC further asserted that the resilience of the nation’s governance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains firm, rooted in the rule of law and transparency.
“As the Super Eagles win and progress, it is a triumph for all Nigerians and for the country as a whole,” the party remarked, drawing a parallel between national unity and the collective success of the country.
The statement concluded by advising Atiku Abubakar and his associates to embrace political reality rather than manufacturing fear. The APC insisted that Nigerians have moved past the “recycled politics” of the opposition and remain supportive of the ongoing reforms intended to stabilize the economy and national security. They warned that the ADC’s current trajectory, fueled by desperation and a lack of a recognizable ideology, points toward an approaching expiry date for the coalition.
“The Super Eagles are now the attraction of all football fans from all over Africa and globally here in Morocco. While watching the Round of 16 match against Mozambique on Monday night, fans from other countries were hailing and cheering Nigeria louder because of the purposeful football displayed on the pitch,” the spokesman added, underscoring the positive international attention Nigeria currently enjoys.
