The Lagos State branch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a rebuttal to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the latter’s criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s description of democracy as a “game.” In a statement released by the party’s spokesperson, Hon. Seye Oladejo, the APC characterized the ADC’s reaction as a deliberate and sensationalist misinterpretation of a common political metaphor.
The ruling party argued that the President’s phrasing was intended to highlight the competitive and structured nature of democratic systems, which rely on participation, strategy, and adherence to established regulations. According to the APC, the ADC’s decision to focus on the literal wording rather than the underlying message reflects a preference for manufacturing controversy over engaging in substantive political dialogue.
The statement further criticized the ADC’s leadership, labeling the party’s recent activities as “theatrics” aimed at gaining social media traction. The APC specifically took aim at publicized instances of ADC officials engaging in “contrived” grassroots activities, such as purchasing street food for photo opportunities, suggesting these actions are a poor substitute for genuine political organization or credible leadership.
“Such poorly scripted performances may generate momentary online attention, but they hardly substitute for credible leadership, genuine grassroots engagement, or meaningful political organization. Nigerians are politically discerning, and no one is deceived by such theatrics.”
Defending the President’s record, the APC emphasized his decades-long involvement in the struggle for Nigeria’s democratic stability. The spokesperson asserted that it is paradoxical for a party with “little electoral relevance” to question the credentials of a statesman whose career has been central to the nation’s political development. The communiqué concluded by urging the ADC to move beyond “clutching at straws” and instead focus on establishing a legitimate political structure that offers viable alternatives to the Nigerian electorate.
