The Labour Party (LP) has lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for formally recognising its Interim National Leadership, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, as the party’s lawful and valid authority.
Checks on the INEC website on Friday confirmed that Senator Usman is now listed as the chairperson of the party’s caretaker committee.
The electoral commission noted that its action was in compliance with a court order directing recognition of the interim leadership.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Senator Usman’s Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ken Asogwa, expressed gratitude to INEC, saying the party “appreciates the commission for standing firmly on the side of law, justice, and constitutionalism, and for demonstrating obedience to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The statement added, “This development brings an end to the prolonged distractions and internal uncertainties that have challenged the party over the past year. We call on our members across the federation to unite behind the interim leadership as it works diligently to reposition the Labour Party for success in forthcoming elections.”
Asogwa emphasized that the LP, as a major opposition party, remains committed to offering Nigerians a credible, people-centered alternative. “Achieving this goal requires unity, dedication, and collective sacrifice from all stakeholders,” he said.
The party also expressed appreciation to its nationwide supporters for their resilience and unwavering belief in the struggle. It commended the judiciary for upholding justice and the media for maintaining principled reporting.
“As we intensify efforts to rebuild and strengthen our structures nationwide, we appeal for patience and continued support from Nigerians.
Conscious of the limited time before the next election cycle, the Labour Party assures the public of its resolve to work tirelessly to restore the party to winning ways and achieve its objectives promptly,” the statement concluded.
