The Labour Party has raised alarm over what it describes as a coordinated assault on its National Chairman, Julius Abure, who was allegedly attacked by a woman at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, as Abure was preparing to board a Max Air flight to Benin City. In a statement released on Saturday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the attacker was identified as Precious Oruche, a social media content creator popularly known as Mama P.
According to the party, Abure was standing quietly in a boarding queue when Mama P suddenly approached and launched a verbal and physical attack, which continued throughout the flight and even after landing in Benin.
“The attacker, Madam P, who is also a known content creator, continued the attack all throughout the duration of the flight, defying all attempts by the Max Air flight attendants to calm her. The assault, which attracted a large number of onlookers, continued on disembarkation at the Benin Airport while she kept recording the scene,” the statement read.
The situation reportedly escalated to the point where airport security operatives had to intervene, shielding Abure from further confrontation and handing the woman over to police authorities for questioning.
However, the drama didn’t end there. The Labour Party claims that shortly after the incident, the woman posted a video online in which she boasted of her influence and political connections.
“In one of her videos, she claimed to have contacts within the highest levels of the Nigerian police and vowed to continue targeting Abure and members of the Labour Party executive,” the statement added.
The video, now circulating on social media, allegedly features Mama P accusing Abure of “killing the Labour Party” and blaming him for Peter Obi’s absence from the party.
Describing the incident as a “suicidal aggression”, the Labour Party leadership insisted that the confrontation was politically motivated and not a spontaneous act.
“We sincerely believe that the lady-agent was on an assignment to accomplish the desires of her paymasters. Assault and cyberbullying are serious crimes, and we urge the police to uncover the network behind this coordinated attack,” Ifoh said.
The party has urged its members nationwide to remain calm and allow the police investigation to run its course, emphasizing that retaliation or escalation is not the way forward.
“We are calling on members of the Labour Party to be calm, even in the face of this unwarranted provocation, and wait for the outcome of the investigation,” the statement concluded.
Abure has been a central figure in the Labour Party’s internal crisis, especially since the party’s surge in popularity during the 2023 general elections, largely driven by Peter Obi’s presidential bid and the emergence of the Obidient movement.
Despite several court rulings including a Court of Appeal judgment affirming his position , Abure’s leadership continues to face fierce resistance from rival factions within the party. A Supreme Court ruling in April 2025 further complicated matters, casting doubt on the legality of his continued tenure due to disputes over convention timelines and the party’s constitution.
With tensions still simmering within the party, this latest incident adds a fresh layer of controversy, potentially deepening divisions and raising concerns over the safety of political figures ahead of the 2027 elections.
