The Labour Party (LP) has formally affirmed Abia State Governor, Alex Chioma Otti, as its National Leader, while extending goodwill to its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC)–led coalition.
This was disclosed in a communiqué issued by the party’s National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, after a meeting of the Labour Party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held on Wednesday to review critical issues affecting the party’s stability, growth, and strategic direction.
According to the communiqué, the NWC unanimously endorsed Governor Otti as the party’s National Leader.
“The National Working Committee, in a unanimous decision, affirmed its recognition of His Excellency, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, as the National Leader of the Labour Party,” the statement read.
The party also acknowledged Peter Obi’s political move, wishing him success in his future endeavours.
“The National leadership of the Labour Party wishes His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, well in his future political pursuits and in his new political party,” the communiqué stated.
In addition, the NWC recognised former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as the party’s National Chairman, reaffirming the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which declared that the tenure of Julius Abure as National Chairman had elapsed.
The Labour Party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fully recognise and accord Nenadi Usman and the party’s National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, all rights and privileges due to them in line with the apex court’s ruling, which the electoral body recently referenced.
The party further resolved that all congresses and its National Convention would be conducted strictly in accordance with the provisions of the Labour Party Constitution, calling on members at all levels to actively participate in the forthcoming congress processes.
“The NWC reaffirmed that all congresses and the National Convention of the Party shall hold accordingly, in strict compliance with the Party Constitution,” the statement said.
The party expressed appreciation to its members and Nigerians at large for their sustained interest and confidence in the Labour Party, reiterating its commitment to national development.
The NWC concluded by reaffirming that the Labour Party remains united, indivisible, and steadfast in its mission to build a Nigeria anchored on equal opportunity, social justice, and good governance.
The Labour Party emerged third in the 2023 presidential election, with Peter Obi as its flagbearer.
