Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has approved a 27.5 per cent Teachers Specific Allowance (TSA) for educators across the state.
The approval was granted on Monday, just hours after the governor presented the 2026 budget to the Kwara State House of Assembly. The allowance is scheduled to take effect from January 2026.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, who explained that the allowance applies to teachers certified by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
According to the statement, TRCN-certified teachers under the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) on the Consolidated Kwara State Education Salary Structure (CONKWESS I) will receive the full 27.5 per cent allowance, while teachers without TRCN certification will receive 21 per cent.
The approval follows sustained agitation by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which had threatened to embark on a statewide industrial action in December 2025 over unmet demands. The union had previously criticised the state government for failing to implement both the Teachers Specific Allowance and the National Harmonised Teachers’ Retirement Age Act, which extends teachers’ retirement age to 65 years or 40 years of service.
With more than 25 states already complying with the revised retirement age policy, the NUT had called for an emergency meeting with the governor before December 13, 2025, to avert a strike.
The statement added that Governor AbdulRazaq reaffirmed the critical role teachers play in the development of the education sector and the nation at large, commending them for their dedication, resilience, and contribution to nation-building.
